Calais 0 Sunderland 1
Stade Julien Denis, Calais
Scorer: Dichio (81m)
Attendance: 2,500
Tuesday July 17th 2001
Danny
Dichio provided an unlikely winner for the Lads as Sunderland scraped
past amateur outfit Racing Union Calais at a rain drenched Stade Julien
Denis tonight.
Peter Reid handed a trial to French defender Ismael Bouzid, who
played the first half for the Lads, who made no less then ten changes
at the break. The only survivor from half time - David Bellion - was
taken off twenty minutes into the second half, allowing Don Hutchison
to return to the game.
The Lads needed Thomas Sørensen
to keep out many saves from the 2000 French Cup finalists, including a
fine effort from Cedric Jeandot after a mistake from Emerson Thome.
However,
the non-leaguers tired out towards the end of the game, and Danny
Dichio tapped in from two yards out with less than ten minutes to go.
