Sunderland 2 West Ham 1 Scorers: Sunderland - Jones (28m), Reid (90m); West Ham - Ljungberg (17m) Sunderland Stadium of Light Attendance: 45,690 Barclays Premier League Saturday March 29, 2008
Kenwyne Jones registered his first goal in 2008 as Sunderland had to come from behind to beat West Ham at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland had to recover from a dreadful start against the Hammers in what were wet conditions at the Stadium of Light, as West Ham capitalised on our inability to string together passes. Dean Ashton hit the post in the tenth minute, but the Hammers took the lead seven minutes later, when Freddie Ljungberg's shot took a deflection off of Nyron Nosworthy as it found its way past Craig Gordon to give the visitors the lead. That seemed to wake Sunderland out of their slumber, and barely ten minutes passed before we equalised, as Andy Reid and Kieran Richardson combined to set up Kenwyne Jones four yards out from goal for the Trinidad and Tobagan striker's first goal of the year. West Ham did have their chances to get back in it, with Carlton Cole sending a shot that was just tipped over the bar by Gordon before half time. Sunderland took the advantage in the second half, but had little to show for it, before Daryl Murphy sent a shot over the bar with nine minutes remaining. West Ham sub James Tomkins denied Kenwyne Jones with two minutes left, but the Lads finally picked up a winning goal deep into injury time, when Carlos Edwards' cross was deflected by the head of Anton Ferdinand, and into the path of Andy Reid, who fired home from inside the area to give us all three points.
