Another week, another cock-up from the referee - an injury time "goal" from Stephen Hunt gave Reading the win at the Madejski this afternoon, despite replays showing that the ball had not crossed the line.
Roy Keane made four changes to the side that drew against Aston Villa, with Craig Gordon returning in goal, while Grant Leadbitter, Michael Chopra and Andy Cole also made the starting XI in favour of Darren Ward, Dickson Etuhu, Anthony Stokes and Ross Wallace. Reading named an unchanged side, with Brynjar Gunnarsson recovering from an ankle injury in time to start.
Sunderland got off to a fairly average start at the Madejski, with Grant Leadbitter overhitting a through ball towards Michael Chopra in the second minute, before Craig Gordon had to be at his best to snatch away a cross from Stephen Hunt. Andy Cole missed a decent chance on four minutes when he miscontrolled the ball, which allowed Marcus Hahnemann to snuff out the danger.
Gordon needed some treatment on 11 minutes after he collided with Bobby Convey in an attempt to catch Kevin Doyle's cross - he carried on, but his first goal kick after play restarted was poor, as Paul McShane's attempted header on it almost landed us in fresh trouble.
Leadbitter nearly hit on lucky with a free kick on 16 minutes that was scrambled clear by the Reading defence, as Reading started to push forward. Dean Whitehead managed to punt away Hunt's cross before the Royals fired a shot well over the bar. We gave away a few free kicks after Dwight Yorke was dispossessed in midfield, as Hunt, Shorey and Convey came close to breaking the deadlock with the two sides heading into the break at 0-0.
Sunderland picked up after the restart with Kenwyne Jones' cross causing some problems for the hosts, before Stephen Hunt hit the post with a shot after he'd beaten Danny Collins, just seconds after Michael Chopra had come close with a 30 yard effort that went over Hahnemann's bar. Roy Keane tried to shake things up by bringing on Ross Wallace and Dickson Etuhu for the final half hour.
Reading took the lead on 69 minutes when James Harper quickly took a free kick, allowing Ibrahima Sonko to flick the ball on for Ivar Ingimarsson to head past Craig Gordon - a goal that a lot of people would have seen coming, given the number of daft free kicks we had conceded during the match.
Sunderland didn't seem to mount any sort of a comeback, as Gordon had to pluck out Convey's cross out of the air, before Kevin Doyle sent a shot just wide of the post on 76 minutes. A turn and shot 25 yards out from Kenwyne Jones went straight to Hahnemann in what was our second shot on target in the entire game.
We won a penalty on with nine minutes to go when Jones was brought down in the box by Sonko - Michael Chopra grabbed the ball and sent Hahnemann the wrong way to score his first goal in four months. Chopra came close to snatching a winner with a few moments left when he blazed on goal that was pushed over by Hahnemann. Chopra injured himself in that, and had to sit out the remainder of the game with Antony Stokes replacing him.
Kenwyne Jones fired a shot straight at the legs of Hahnemann on 88 minutes, with the Royals' American stopper forcing the ball out for a corner, which saw Dickson Etuhu head Wallace's set piece over the bar. Sunderland looked to have sealed a point, but as we cleared Stephen Hunt's shot off the line, referee Steve Tanner incorrectly ruled that the ball had crossed the line, giving the home side all 3 points.
