Sunderland's Under 18s saw their season end early, as Manchester City knocked them out of the Academy play-offs on Monday evening.
The 4-2 loss in Manchester was the youngsters' third loss of the season to the Blues, following a league defeat and of course, that FA Youth Cup semi-final defeat. After a goal-less first half that saw Nathan Luscombe, Martyn Waghorn and Conor Hourihane have good chances for the Lads, City took the lead within minutes of the restart when Dedryck Boyota headed in David McDermott's corner. Sunderland equalised ten minutes later when Liam Noble got his head to Hourihane's corner, only for City to regain the lead a minute later when McDermott fired a 20 yarder beyond Martin Staples. Two minutes later, with the game just over the hour mark, City made it 3-1 when their persistence from a corner saw Ryan McGivern finally bundle the ball over the line after we'd blocked two efforts. In the 66th minute, Luscombe pulled it back to 3-2, turning in another Hourihane set piece, before a foul on Robert Mak gave City an injury time penalty which was duly converted by Kieran Trippier.
